Healthy gums after periodontal care
Gum & Periodontal Care

Healthy gums,
a strong smile.

Healthy gums are the foundation of a strong smile. Periodontal care prevents, diagnoses, and treats gum disease before it harms your teeth — keeping your smile healthy for years. Provided gently by Dr. Bradley, a UCLA-trained dentist.

What is gum disease?

Periodontal disease, caught and treated early.

Gum disease (periodontal disease) starts with bacterial buildup along the gum line. In its early stage — gingivitis — it’s still reversible with proper care. Left untreated, it advances to periodontitis and can lead to bone and tooth loss. Regular periodontal care helps us detect and manage it early.

Why it helps

What periodontal care does for you.

Stops it early

Caught early, gum disease can be halted before it damages the bone and tissue that hold your teeth in place.

Keeps your natural teeth

Treating the infection protects the support around your teeth, so you keep more of your own teeth for longer.

Comfortable, gentle care

Modern, minimally invasive techniques keep treatment comfortable, and any minor soreness afterward is easy to manage.

Signs to watch for

When it may be time for gum care.

Red or swollen gums

Inflamed gums that look red or puffy often signal early-stage gum disease.

Bleeding gums

Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss can point to gingivitis or a more advanced condition.

Persistent bad breath

Ongoing bad breath that doesn’t clear with regular brushing and flossing can come from bacteria below the gum line.

Gum recession

As gum disease progresses, your gums may pull away from your teeth, making them look longer.

Common questions

Gum care questions, answered.

Is periodontal treatment painful?

Treatment is comfortable thanks to gentle techniques, and any minor soreness afterward is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Caring for gum disease relieves discomfort far more often than it causes it.

What does it cost, and is it covered by insurance?

Most major dental plans help cover periodontal treatment, especially when it’s medically necessary, and we offer monthly payment plans. We verify your benefits and review your options at your appointment — no surprises.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease develops when plaque — a sticky film of bacteria — builds up along and beneath the gum line and isn’t fully removed by brushing and flossing. Over time it irritates the gums and triggers infection. Smoking, diabetes, hormonal changes, certain medications, stress, and genetics can all raise your risk.

Can gum disease be reversed?

It depends on how far it has progressed. In its earliest stage, gingivitis, it’s fully reversible with professional cleanings and better at-home care. Once it advances to periodontitis, the damage can’t be fully undone, but it can be managed and halted. The sooner you act, the more of your natural gum and bone you preserve.

How do I keep my gums healthy after treatment?

Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush, floss daily to clear bacteria below the gum line, and ask us about an antibacterial rinse. Just as important are your routine periodontal maintenance visits, where we remove hardened buildup and monitor your gum health over time. Avoiding tobacco and eating a balanced diet help too.
